Lochnagar Crater

Lochnagar

This crater, the largest on the Western Front, was blown under the German lines near La Boisselle on 1 July 1916 at the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. Some 60,000 lbs of explosives were used, blowing debris 4,000 ft into the air and creating a hole 300 ft across and 90 ft deep. Some idea of the crater's scale can be had by finding the people standing on its rim.
